I know how difficult it is to have a consult with a new colorist. I'm here to educate you and guide you to a successful coloring experience. As I tell all my clients, ask yourself this question: what are your expectations?
You have to be realisitic. Educate yourself on the terminology. A buttery blonde is different than a wheat colored one. One is a warm tone and the other is a cool tone. Visual aids are always welcomed. They give the colorist insight as to which tonal family your eye is acclimated. If your selection is correct it allows the colorist to nail the color family right off the bat. We colorists have to play detective and to read behind the lines.
If your colorist isn't asking questions such as... How long have you been coloring your hair?
Do you color it to cover gray or to blend it? How often do you color it? When was the last time you colored your hair? Do you use sodium chlorine free and sulfate free shampoo to promote color retention? The sixty four million dollar question is... Do you color your hair at home?
Swimming is the number one deterrent to keeping your hair color alive. Salt and chlorine pools are chock full of minerals that expell the color off the hair shaft.
Here are five important keys in the consultation.
1. What is your lifestyle?
2. What do you do? Are you a stay at home mom or do you work outside the home?
3. Are you committed to the upkeep of your color?
4. Are you willing to purchase the prescribed take home hair care products?
5. Are you willing to do in salon treatments to fortify your hair to prepare it for the hair coloring procedure?
We colorists ask you to do your "homework" and to take our product suggestions to heart. It's the only way a colorist can guarantee their work. The benefit is consistent coloring services time and time again.
